The Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) is a national initiative designed to promote the development of personalized medicine and personalized health in Switzerland. The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences heads the implementation of the Initiative on behalf of the Federal Government. SPHN will build the infrastructure necessary to exploit the diversity of health-related data for research and innovation.
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (ETHs), Universities and University Hospitals proposed a research initiative in the area of Personalized Health. SPHN will ensure the harmonisation of information systems and data types between the different institutions involved and facilitate the nationwide exchange of health-related data that is needed for research in this area. Switzerland will thereby be able to exploit the potential of «Big data» and make progress in Medicine and Personalized Health.
Beginning of 2016, SAMS was mandated by the State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI) to develop a Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN). In compliance with the service contract signed between SAMS and SERI for the period 2017-2020, SAMS acts as the legal entity and bears the organizational, legal and financial responsibility for SPHN. On this basis, the Swiss Government has allocated a total of CHF 68 million to the initiative; CHF 18 Mio of which are dedicated to the BioMedIT project which is under the responsibility of SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. The matching funds principle applies to all financial contributions, i.e. the participating institutions must provide their own contributions (in cash and/or in kind) to match the funds provided by SPHN. The financing thus reflects the ratio of the contribution and the benefit that the partners of the initiative make or generate.
The SPHN partner institutions are represented by experts in the different governing bodies, who support the development and implementation of the SPHN. The work is coordinated by SAMS collaborators of the SPHN Management Office. The SPHN flyer contains information on the governing bodies, the timeline and the planned attribution of the funds. In order to make the best use of the available resources, the SPHN calls for proposals are coordinated with the ETH-Domain «Strategic Focus Area in Personalized Health and Related Technologies» (PHRT).
